Reproductive Performance for Holstein Friesian × Arsi and Holstein Friesian × Boran Crossbred Cattle
Authors
Abstract:
The study was carried out at Agarfa ATVET College dairy farm to evaluate the reproductive performance of Holstein Friesian× Arsi and Holstein Friesian ×Boran cattle. For the study, records compiled from 1983 to 2012 at the Agarfa dairy farm were used as original data. The effects of breed, bloodlines, season and parity on the reproductive traits were evaluated. Data were analyzed using the general model of the SAS program. The overall mean ± SE of age at first service (AFS), age at first calving (AFC), days open (DO), calving interval (CI), number of service per conception (NSPC), breeding efficiency (BE) and longevity were 32.05 ± 0.57 months, 41.16 ± 0.56 months, 194.62 ± 3.42 days, 475.92 ± 3.44 days, 1.35 ± 0.03 service, 68.67 ± 0.01% and 7.77 ± 0.25 years, respectively. Breed had significant effect (P

full textEstrus Performance of Boran and Boran × Holstein Friesian Crossbred Cattle Synchronized with a Protocol based on Estradiol Benzoate or Gonadotrophin-Releasing Hormone
The objectives of this study were to determine estrus behavior, interval to estrus, duration of estrus and time of ovulation of Boran, and Boran × Holstein Friesian (HF) breeds. A total of 113 cows and heifers from the two breeds were synchronized with two estrus synchronization protocols: 1) estradiol benzoate (EB) + controlled internal drug release (CIDR) + prostaglandin (PGF2α); and 2) gonad...
full textGenetic relationships between detailed reproductive traits and performance traits in Holstein-Friesian dairy cattle.
The objective of the study was to estimate the genetic relationships between detailed reproductive traits derived from ultrasound examination of the reproductive tract and a range of performance traits in Holstein-Friesian dairy cows. The performance traits investigated included calving performance, milk production, somatic cell score (i.e., logarithm transformation of somatic cell count), carc...

Bovine Leucocyte Adhesion Deficiency (BLAD) is a Holstein-Friesian HF) specific autosomal recessively inherited disorder characterized by recurrent pneumonia, ulcerative and granulomatous stomatitis, enteritis, periodontitis, loss of teeth, delayed wound healing, persistent neutrophilia and death at an early age [1]. BLAD is a disease characterized by a reduced expression of the adhesion molecu...
full textDifferential macrophage function in Brown Swiss and Holstein Friesian cattle
There is strong evidence that high yielding dairy cows are extremely susceptible to infectious diseases, and that this has severe economic consequences for the dairy industry and welfare implications. Here we present preliminary functional evidence showing that the innate immune response differs between cow breeds. The ability of macrophages (MØ) to kill pathogens depends in part on oxygen-depe...
full textDgat1 Polymorphism K232a in Sahiwal (indian Zebu) and Frieswal (holstein Friesian X Sahiwal Crossbred) Cattle
The positional candidate gene DGAT1, within QTL of BTA14, harboring a lysine to alanine substitution (K232A) is significantly associated with milk production traits. The present investigation was undertaken to estimate the frequency of the DGAT1 K232A polymorphism in Indian zebu breed, Sahiwal (B. indicus; N= 51) and crossbred, Frieswal (HF X Sahiwal; N= 126) cattle using PCR-RFLP technique. De...
